Breathing Strategies to Manage Anxiety

Our breathing is a reflection of what is happening inside emotionally. It is impossible to breathe slowly while maintaining anger! It is impossible to breathe rapidly whilst meditating or trying to relax. Only one emotion can be dominant at any one time. So, if you are anxious or having a panic attack, your breath will be shot, rapid gasps… slow it down! Deep breathes, long exhales. Just 2 or 3 will quickly change your state, slow your breathing and allow you to become calmer, more balanced. Just focusing on your breathing. Try it for yourself.

Suicide Warning Signs

Depression, anxiety and mental health challenges are the silent killers in our cities. Who would imagine that 65,000 of our fellow citizens would feel that life was so bad they would seriously contemplate suicide. What does that say about us as a society? Never before have we been so connected and yet so lonely and isolated. The internet and social media has brought people – ‘friends’ into our lounges, our bedrooms … into our lives. However, instead of making us feel closer, all it does is emphasise how different we all are. This difference is altering the way we look at ourselves. And the more we look ‘at others,’ the more dis-satisfied we become with ourselves and our lives. Suicide is a major problem. Look our for your mates, your family, your work colleagues. Most of us are going to know (or already do know) someone who has decided it is all too much and take their own life. This is never okay. Speak up. Please ask for help if you feel down, lonely, or overwhelmed.

I Can’t Think

Have you ever been so shocked, so overwhelmed or so afraid that your brain freezes! You can’t think! You mind seems addled, and even the simplest task or question confuses you! You are not alone! It is the ‘job’ of our Unconscious Mind to keep us safe! When we are faced with something so horrible, or so confusing that we cannot rationalise, our conscious mind (where we think) shuts down. We verbalise this by saying: ‘I feel like I am walking through treacle or mud.’ It’s as if time stands still. And often we feel detached – like watching a movie – it can’t be real, can it! I can’t think, is the only way to describe this feeling.

This type of anxiety usually starts with shyness, but is almost always increased by ‘well-intentioned’ prompting by others. “Don’t be silly… theres nothing to worry about!” (And of course, something happens!) There could be trauma, bullying or mocking memories but ultimately it is our own ‘imagining’ disasters happening that keep us frozen. Life is for living. Here are some tips and hints to help you overcome your fears and start interacting with others.

Your Past is Your Key to Success

The foundation of our identity has been set by the time we are 7 years old. We absorbed everything, good or bad that happens. Everything we hear, see, feel or experience we believe is ‘about us!’ Our beliefs are based on these perceptions. That is scary. Imagine asking a 7 year old to make decision for your future. As we grow, these ‘unconscious beliefs’ determine how we view our world. Most are not true but influence us nonetheless. Its time to change. The key to success is facing the past, updating our beliefs and moving into the future with confidence and a new identity.

Are You Living in the Past

Living in the past creates fear, anxiety, and depression. It sucks the joy out of living! Whether you are sad that you have ‘lost’ something or someone, or fearful ‘something’ may happen again in the future, – you cannot live in the present. Your life is consumed by ‘what if!’ It is a fantasy world that creates anxiety and depression. Your only job on Earth is to contribute and be happy. It’s time to get back to living.

Trauma

Trauma can be physical or invisible! Physical trauma is seen, accepted and sympathised! Mental Trauma is the ‘invisible trauma’ often diagnosed as long term stress, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress(PTSD).  Mental Health trauma is a silent robber of the ‘Joy of Living’ and it can affect anyone.  It is invisible!
