Why do some people overcome adversity?

Recently I was watching the history of a top rugby player and a top singer. The thing that they had in common was that they had come from a background of poverty and extreme abuse.

This got me to thinking. Why is it that they have not let this past of abuse and poverty stop them from succeeding? What is it that enables them to overcome this past adversity?

Again, when you looked at the history of these two people, they both had a very clear idea of what they wanted to be. Both of them at an early age knew what they wanted. They did not dwell on what they did not want.

Most people are extremely clear on what they do not want but very unclear on what they do want. You get what you think about and if you are not clear on what you want, you won’t get it. We spend more time on planning a holiday than on what we want for the future.

If you become clear on what you want and spend time thinking about this your brain will consciously and unconsciously start looking for opportunities to achieve it.

This of course does not mean that you just need to sit and think about what you want. You also have to take action. When opportunities arise, you have to act.

Take the time to plan what you want in life. Take the time to imagine and feel what it would be like every day when you succeed. Take the action necessary to move you towards what you want.

Don’t let the past become an excuse. Your past is your history and not your future.
