What’s holding you back?
If you want anything to change in your life, the first thing that you have to want is to make a change. You might feel that you need to change your smoking habit, but do you really want to change it? Your want must be bigger than your need for you to quit smoking successfully. You must also ‘perceive’ it is safe for you to give up smoking cigarettes.
The next thing you need to change is the limiting beliefs that you have about yourself. We all have limiting beliefs. These beliefs start whilst we are in the womb. If your parents have had a stressful marriage or event, then chances are that you will have a belief that it is not safe before you are even born. If your birth is traumatic, then that will reinforce this belief. From when you are born to the age of seven, you have no filters to say if something is said to you is true or not. Whatever is said to you forms new limiting beliefs. Later as you go on in life, your experiences and what is said to you form more limiting beliefs. Again, ask yourself: do I really want to change?
Unresolved Emotional Past Events
The next step is to resolve any unresolved stress or trauma from the past. Any unresolved stress or trauma is like an ‘unconscious anchor holding you back and making it very hard to move forward, plan or even imagine a successful future. Emotional events can be Big Trauma (horrific events like accidents, abuse, death, etc. Small traumas are repeated regularly like bullying, abuse or lack of love/respect/emotional support). Often smoking is a way for a person to ‘block out’ or distract themselves and not allow themselves to think about the past.
Imagine Your Future Clearly
The next step to change is to have a clear idea of your future as a non-smoker. Close your eyes, relax, and use your imagination to imagine and feel it clearly. Imagine and feel what it will be like when you have stopped smoking cigarettes. Think about the extra time you will have. The freedom from the demands of smoking. The extra cash flow! The trips. The connections with friends and family – how will they change now you are a non-smoker?
