Your Past is Your Key to Success

Your Past is Your Key to Success

Your Key to Success can be found when you look at your past.  The best way to understand yourself and your life is by examining your history. Your present beliefs can be directly attributed to how you grew up.  Every action or decision we make is controlled by the beliefs embedded in our ‘unconscious mind’.  These were implanted from as early as ‘conception’ and up to 7 years of age

It is important to avoid living in the past, but you can still use the past to your advantage.

Understand your past
  • What was your childhood like? How did your parents treat you? What was your experience like at school? Did you have a lot of friends? Did you go to church? How did you use playtime? Was your home a happy one?
  • Think about your best and worst experiences. How have those influenced your life? Did you have a bad experience in gym class that turned you off sports? Were you bullied? Did you become a scientist because you received a lot of recognition for your success in high school science classes?
Think About Your Successes.

What were you ‘good at’ when you were 12 years old?  Was it sport?  Don't let the past limit your success in the future Schoolwork – what subjects?  Debating?  Saving?  Everybody has something they do naturally. Think about the things that come easily to you.  What did your friends or family ask you for help with?

  • Make a list of your biggest failures.

Choose the top 10 failures and leave the others alone for another time. What lessons can you gain from those experiences?

  • Why did those challenges occur?

Where did you go wrong? Was it an unwise decision? Did you give up too quickly? Perhaps you acted without thinking or without enough information?  Failure is simply feedback that something didn’t work…. Time to try another way or get more information and retry.

  • Examining your failures is an excellent way to prevent them from reoccurring throughout your lifetime. Repeating mistakes is par for the course. You can do better!
  • Examine your mistakes so you can avoid them in the future.
Make a list of the things you do not like about your life.

Maybe you do not like your job, your house, or your physique. Was there something that happened in the past which led to your current circumstances? What can you change to achieve a different outcome? What could you study, learn or start to do to change your circumstances?

Can you see how a few changes could lead to a big difference in the future? What are the likely outcomes if you fail to change today?

Examine the major categories of your life.

A few examples include finances, family life, social life, and health. Look at your presentValues and beliefs lead to success circumstances and then look at your past and find the roots of your behaviors and beliefs that led to your current situation.

For example, maybe you do not save money because your parents never saved money. Maybe your mom was always raiding your piggybank and saving money seemed like a futile effort. Do you spend more than you earn?  Why?  Whose example are you following?

Once you know why you do what you do, it is easy to make changes to your habits and routines.  The past gave you the learning, but now you can choose a different result. Give yourself permission to make changes to enhance your life.

Consider your relationships.

Why did you choose your partner? Perhaps you do not to have a significant other. Is this by choice?  Think about how your childhood and past relationships may be affecting your current relationship status.  Is it time to change your expectations around friends and relationships?

Choose to let go of the things that are holding you back.

Just because you may have failed in the past, it’s no reason to give up on trying today.  Let go of the negative things from the past that are tainting your present and your future. Each day is a new day.

The things you do today that ‘seem weird’ and out of character or do not make any sense are not random. Your past has a huge influence on the person you have become. While it is not wise to live in the past, there are benefits.  Your past holds the key to success, as this is a result of your unconscious habits and beliefs. Use your past to your advantage and then let it go.
